MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THERESA VILLIERS MP

For most of us, Christmas provides a much-needed opportunity to take a break from the rollercoaster of everyday life and enjoy spending time with our family and friends.

However, looking back on the last year, 2009 has been a very difficult year for many families across Barnet. News that Britain remains in recession when the economies of all our major competitors have started to grow again is bitterly disappointing. I have received many letters and visits to my advice bureau over the last year from constituents who are worried about rising unemployment, the decline in their savings, and from those who are struggling to pay household bills.

Afghanistan has cast a long shadow over proceedings in Parliament throughout the year. I hope that most of us across the country will reflect this Christmas on those who have lost loved ones in the conflict or who have suffered injury on active duty. I hope that our troops out in Afghanistan can still enjoy a bit of Christmas cheer even though they are so far away from their families.

Finally, I would like to thank all those constituents who have to work over the Christmas break, such as medical and nursing home staff, the police and emergency services. They do such a vital job in keeping key services running across Barnet. They deserve our thanks and appreciation.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and send my best wishes for a prosperous 2010.
