MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has contacted the Rabbis of synagogues across Chipping Barnet to offer reassurance and to pledge her support in efforts to combat an increase of anti-semitic incidents which have occurred in Barnet over the past fortnight.
Jewish businesses in the Golders Green area of Barnet were targeted with anti-Semitic graffiti and behaviour in shops. Theresa has been working with Mike Freer and other local councillors on this issue. The council has urged the Borough Police Commander to ensure that Officers and Safer Neighbourhood Teams increase their visibility and pay particular attention to Jewish premises.
Theresa Villiers MP said: “Incidents such as this are wholly unacceptable and I am doing everything I can to support the council and Barnet police in fighting this kind behaviour.”
“It is clear that the authorities need to increase their vigilance regarding incidents such as this that too often accompany the reporting of events in the Middle East. A similar spike upwards in anti-semitic incidents occurred in a number of places during the Lebanon war in the Summer of 2007. It was good to hear from my local synagogues that the police had been in touch to give pro-active reassurance and support at this difficult time.”
