VILLIERS JOINS LOCAL RESIDENTS TO CAMPAIGN FOR BARNET MARKET OWNERS TO RESURFACE MARKET SITE

On Saturday, Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, joined members of 'Friends of Barnet Market', High Barnet Councillors, Wendy Prentice and David Longstaff, and over fifty supporters at Barnet Market to highlight a petition signed by five thousand local residents who want to see the market site resurfaced by its owners, Mr and Mrs Walsh.

The stony surface has been an issue ever since the market returned to the St. Albans Road site late last year. It is now hoped that the strength of local feeling, demonstrated by the vast number of signatures on the petition, will put pressure on Mr and Mrs Walsh to go ahead with resurfacing the site.

Theresa said, “It was great to see so many people turning out in support of Barnet Market. ‘Friends of Barnet Market’ have done an amazing job in highlighting this issue and organising the petition on this important local issue.”

“The market’s owners should be in no doubt about the strength of local feeling over this. The site urgently needs resurfacing. The uneven surface is uncomfortable to stand on for any length of time and is causing real difficulties. Unless it is resurfaced soon, there must be a risk that visitors and stall holders may begin to drift away.”

“Both I and High Barnet Ward’s councillors remain absolutely determined to keep Barnet Market flourishing. The market has been a central part of our community for hundreds of years and I will continue to work hard to secure its long term future.”

High Barnet Councillor, David Longstaff, added “Let’s hope that this impressive display of people power will drive home to the owners just how important the market is to local people and result in the site being resurfaced very soon.”

Friends of Barnet Market plan to invite Mr and Mrs Walsh to view the petition, which is in the hands of a solicitor, and respond within the next few weeks.
